Reading Festival 2015 – Saturday 29th August

The day started off with a long walk down the river to the festival grounds, where thousands of excited music fans were itching to get in on the action. After a little bit of running, we arrived just in time to see the second half of the BABYMETAL set. There must always be a huge amount of pressure on the acts performing first on the Main Stage but the Japanese super-group showed no sign of it!

The hugely popular band put on an awesome show and the crowd really got involved with their set, there were even a few circle pits thrown in for good measure! The highlight for us was their performance of ‘Gimme Chocolate’, during which thousands of people sang along to the super catchy track! It was surprising to see such a great reaction for a band that had been given the responsibility of opening the show and they did an amazing job of getting people pumped for the rest of the day.

After a little bit of exploring, we stumbled across a pleasant surprise, we walked down to ‘The Pit’ to catch the end of ‘THE ONE HUNDRED’ set! For a start, it was packed! We struggled our way forward to get a better view and wow, we are glad we did! The foursome tore up the stage and gave the crowd everything they were looking for, a solid mix of metal, rock, dance and hip-hop, creating an original sound which got a huge reaction.

Following on from this, we headed back down to the main stage to catch PIERCE THE VEIL! They played all their classics and the crowd repaid them by singing along to every lyric!

The American band had everything, energy, interaction and even some good old guitar smashing! It was also really cool to see guitarist Tony Perry back in action after the injuries he sustained during a mountain bike accident in June. Pierce The Veil always sound incredible live and Reading was no exception! As their set finished, the crowd stood still, because up next was the return of ALEXISONFIRE!

We were excited to get a chance to finally see them live after thinking we had lost the chance when they split in 2011/2012 and they did not disappoint! The full line-up gave it their all, with a powerful and hard hitting performance that would have pleased long-time fans as well as first timers. However, Wade made it clear that he wanted the die-hard fans to sing along by stating “For those of you who do know, push everyone else out of the way and get to the front, this one’s called ‘The Northern’ ”. This was followed up with an answer (of sorts) to the question on everybody’s lips… what is next for Alexisonfire? The answer was cryptic and gave no further insight… they just blasted out the legendary ’44 Calibre Love Letter’. Maybe we will get to see more of the Canadian group than we originally thought… fingers crossed!

The day at this point had already been awesome, but exhausting! All the excitement and singing had put us through our paces, but there was no time to rest. Next stop…the pit, to see PVRIS!

We had to catch the set from outside in the rain as getting inside was impossible. Although they started later than expected, it was high energy and a great show from start to finish. When we saw them support LOWER THAN ATLANTIS a few months ago, we were pleasantly surprised with how awesome they were, and this set confirmed just how epic they are live.

Next was the turn of co-headliners, BRING ME THE HORIZON! We found our spot and waited patiently as the stage crew set up massive screens at the back of the stage and carried out their sound checks. The atmosphere had changed dramatically and there was a sense of excitement and intensity from the crowd. This was heightened by a hilarious health and safety video at the beginning of the set that added a surprising element to the show. Hearing so many people laughing at the start of a set that we all knew was going to blast everybody’s eardrums was a nice touch! bmth

Then, without fail BMTH came out with Oli demanding the biggest circle pit that Reading had ever seen, and of course… the crowd gladly obliged. With an awesome mix of old and new, the action never stopped! Starting with ‘Happy Song’ and moving onto the Sempiternal classics ‘Shadow Moses’, ‘House of Wolves’ and ‘Go To Hell for Heaven’s Sake’, the set was relentless! There were even old school moments in the form of ‘Blessed With A Curse’ and ‘Chelsea Smile’. But the loudest reaction came at the end of the set when the Sheffield lads played their hit single ‘Drown’. Everybody was jumping and the circle pits were spinning, it was the perfect end to an incredibly heavy show.

Lastly, and by no means least… metal legends and Reading Festival 2015 headliners… METALLICA!

The metal gods came out to a roar from the huge crowd! On his arrival to the stage, James simply stated “We are Metallica, this is what we do!” then continued to blast the bands classic ‘FUEL’! That followed by ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, ‘Battery’, ‘King Nothing’ and ‘Ride the Lightning’ delighted fans! They ended the first part of their set with ‘Seek and Destroy’ which really got everybody moving.

METALLICA seemed to be having as much fun as the crowd and their interaction with fans was superb! After a chorus of encore requests the band came out to tear up the stage once again with a three song follow up! ‘Whiskey In The Jar’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ closed their set as hundreds of black beach balls rained down on the audience.

It was the ultimate end to a rock fuelled day at Reading, signing 2015 off as one of the festivals best!
